Grow Your Own Potatoes
The Grow Your Own Potatoes initiative, with AHDB Potatoes, will again feature on our busy calendar.
200 primary school children will enjoy the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get involved in planting their own crop of potatoes in March. This practical experience continues as the children take the potatoes back to their school, carefully nurturing them before returning them to the showground for harvesting in June.
During both trips to the showground the children will take part in workshops where they will learn where potatoes come from, how to cook the potatoes, the history of the humble spud and the nutritional value of potatoes. Potatoes are packed full of lots of important vitamins and minerals. They are a great, low fat energy source for growing children.
In 2017 children from the following schools attended:
Brackenfield School, Harrogate
Hackforth and Hornby CE Primary School, Bedale
Lilycroft Primary School, Bradford
Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School, Rawdon, Leeds
Rothwell St Mary’s RC Primary School, Rothwell, Leeds
Scotton Lingerfield Primary School, Knaresborough
Willow Tree Primary School, Harrogate
Here’s what one of our previous participants had to say.....
"Over the course of the event the children were introduced to the magic of potato growing, experienced success with their crops and enjoyed the fruits of their labours! Opportunities for cross curricular learning were many and varied and the children have continued growing food at school, some of which is used by our kitchen for the children's lunches.
This is a fabulous, well managed event that we're keen to attend again."
