In an effort to address a number of health issues in rural communities and ensure that accurate information was available to, in particular, the farming communities of Yorkshire, The Yorkshire Rural Support Network, together with the Regional Department of Public Health and The Men’s Health Forum produced a user-friendly Haynes Manual style health booklet for farming families and their staff. The Network brought together members of the farming fraternity to have input into the content, layout and presentation of the booklet and coupled with the medical expertise of the other health organisations, created a very comprehensive and readable A5 booklet entitled ‘Fit for Farming’. It has been very widely distributed County wide and has won a Highly Commended classification at the BMA Awards in London at the end of 2011 in the ‘Best Patient Information’ Category.
The Network was delighted to work with The Farming Life Centre in Derbyshire and the Men’s Health Forum, to produce a second edition of Fit for Farming, with new sections on eye and ear care, ageing well, mental health/dementia and sex talk. The cartoons of legendary Northumberland farmer, the late Henry Brewis bring the words to life and anyone connected with the farming industry will be able to relate to them! Copies will be available on all Farming Help Stands at the Great Yorkshire Show and shortly in hard copy in all Yorkshire livestock marts and all Yorkshire HSE Safety and Health Awareness Days, as well as online at HSE, Livestock Auctioneers Association or download a copy at the bottom of this page.
