Focusing on the Next Steps with Careers Event

Students from secondary schools across Yorkshire will be given top tips on how to prepare their CVs as well as interview practice at a careers event in Harrogate next month.

Students at Careers in Focus 2015

There will be dozens of ‘hands-on’ opportunities at the ‘Careers in Focus’ day at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, including the chance to take part in mock interviews with would-be employers, as well as CV feedback at a special ‘CV Clinic’.

Careers in Focus, organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, takes place on Tuesday 4 October and is a one-stop shop for secondary school students, and their parents, from across the region to learn about a wide range of employment opportunities.

Now in its ninth year, around 1,500 students are expected to attend this free one-day event showcasing a wide range of industries from across the North of England.

Schoolchildren attending the event will be given the chance to experience ‘a day in the life’ of a variety of rural jobs – from construction and horticulture to medicine and engineering.

Students will be able to speak to representatives from many of the leading colleges, universities, businesses, and apprenticeship schemes from across the region, with Nestle and Barclays involved for the first time.

And they will also have the chance to hear about would-be employers’ own career paths –plus the best and worst bits of their jobs – during live interviews throughout the day with BBC Radio York presenter Gareth Barlow.

Organiser, Elizabeth Hudson, from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, said: “Farming faces many varied challenges in the years ahead and we need talented individuals at the heart of rural businesses, as well as supporting organisations, to ensure a successful future for the industry.”

“The Society plays its part in helping to address this by inspiring secondary school pupils to explore careers within farming and the food supply sector, as well as a whole range of other options,” she added.
