Society Wins Green Business of the Year Award
Yorkshire Agricultural Society staff were celebrating recently when the Society
was awarded the Green Business of the Year Award at the Yorkshire Rural Awards.
The awards ceremony, now in its second year, was hosted by Gervase Phinn and
took place at Pavilions of Harrogate. More than 200 guests attended and enjoyed
a three dinner, with many of the ingredients being provided by local suppliers.
Sarah Ferguson, the Society’s Facilities Manager, said: “We are delighted to
have won this prestigious award, particularly as the competition was so strong
this year! The Yorkshire Agricultural Society has worked very hard over the last
12 months to improve its existing environmental credentials and entering the Green
Business of the Year provided an opportunity to highlight some of the changes
and improvements it has made to its business practices during that time. These
changes have included promoting sustainability, reducing water usage, reducing
waste with a year round recycling programme for items including, all paper and
cardboard, glass, printer cartridges and even food waste which is recycled via
composting and into the Society’s own wormery.”
The Society plans to continue to improve its environmental and sustainable credentials
and future projects include the new Regional Agricultural Centre, which will incorporate
local materials and energy saving systems and the new farm shop, which will help
champion the cause of local food to a wider audience. The Awards are organised
by the Dalesman magazine.
