We offer a range of free courses for staff from Nurseries, Primary and Secondary Schools. Each course will specify the Key Stage level that is it aimed towards.

The majority of courses are held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate with occasional courses held at other venues around Yorkshire.

All courses are organised and funded by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. They are FREE for participants, however, cancellations within 5 working days of the course start date will be charged £25 + VAT.

Tuesday 17 October - Taking learning outdoors: barriers, benefits, activities & funding EYFS - KS2

Share your barriers to learning outside and look at real examples of how others have overcome similar issues. Try a range of simple, cheap cross-curricular activities ideal for first (& subsequent) steps for taking your learning outside. Experience & discuss the proven benefits of learning outdoors and in a natural environment. Be signposted to lots of exciting (& often free) resources and potential funding opportunities to help develop your outdoor learning and learning environments. Tweak your termly plan to include some outdoor learning.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Thursday 19 October - Starting a school vegetable garden (all ages)

Come and learn how you can create a productive vegetable garden at your school. From what equipment you’ll need, to planting calendars and caring for your plants our experts from RHS Harlow Carr will take you through the process step by step. A follow up course for teachers ready to plant will take place in the Spring term.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Tuesday 7 November - Creative Outdoor Maths EYFS - KS1

This course investigates different uses for natural materials, locations and simple equipment in delivering maths in the outdoor world.

  • Get ideas for games and activities that can be easily used and adapted to different school environments – play and sports fields, large or small wooded areas, and on playgrounds to deliver maths in creative ways in the outdoors.
  • Discuss how these ideas may be applied in your role, explore links to the National Curriculum, topics and books and stories.

Wednesday 8 November - Team Building & Problem Solving KS3

This course enables delegates to experience a variety of team building and problem solving exercises. By the end of the course, delegates will have completed activities, including:

  • Using photos and diagrams to solve problems.
  • Using different everyday materials in a series of team exercises.
  • Working in different sized teams to solve puzzles and problems.
  • Discuss how these ideas may be applied in their role, explore links to the National Curriculum, topics and books and stories.

Thursday 9 November - The Language of Nature EYFS - KS1

A hands-on outdoor day to inspire educators with ideas to develop children’s language and literacy skills through imaginative, multisensory, nature-based activities. The day will include games, crafts, stories and imaginative exercises which engage learners with the outdoor setting.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Monday 13 November - Supporting Autism and Neurodiversity Outside KS1 - 4

This course will explore autism friendly pedagogy and showcase several effective strategies, such as sensory circuits in nature, attention autism and sensory stories. Sessions will provide participants with opportunities to experience these activities first hand and have a chance to devise their own to take away.

Tuesday 21 November - How to maximise farm visits to boost children's learning KS1 - KS2

Thinking of taking your school class to visit a farm but don’t know where to start or how best to tie a farm visit into the curriculum? This course will answer all your questions by taking you onto a farm to hear from a farmer and LEAF Education who regularly host educational visits.

This course, taking place at White Quarry Farm near Tadcaster, will give you all the knowledge you need to take your pupils on a farm visit with confidence about learning outcomes and practical considerations.

Designed for primary educators, this event offers practical insights and activity ideas linked to food, farming and the countryside with lots of ideas to take back to school, covering subjects from science to art.
