We are proud to present the 13th edition of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Women In Farming Network flagship annual event, which will be held at the Garden Rooms at Tennants, Leyburn, DL8 5SG, from 10am to 3pm on Tuesday 13 October.
The Autumn Gathering, in partnership with Barclays and sponsored by HECK! and Irwin Mitchell, welcomes all in farming and rural communities across the region and features four inspiring speakers with fascinating stories to tell about their career journeys.
Why this is an occasion not to be missed
Bringing together voices from across the food and farming sector, the event will explore the many different routes into agriculture and the skills, experiences and opportunities that can help build a successful career.
Through a series of personal presentations and a panel discussion, the speakers will share their experiences, decisions and opportunities that have shaped their careers, the challenges they have overcome, the lessons learned along the way, and the advice they would offer to those looking to develop their own careers within agriculture.
The day aims to demonstrate the diverse pathways, experiences and opportunities that exist across agriculture, inspiring attendees to explore new possibilities, develop their skills and make valuable connections across the industry.
The Women In Farming Autumn Network is an initiative of the Yorkshire Rural Support Network, funded by farming charity, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.
Capacity is limited so we would advise booking early to avoid missing out.
Tickets are £25 per person and include refreshments, lunch, networking and an optional behind the scenes tour of Tennants.
Introducing the speakers
Helen Wyman – Host of Autumn Gathering from TwoCan
Born into Yorkshire farming, Helen is a regular at Women in Farming events and is delighted to return this year as chair. A 2022 Nuffield Farming Scholar, Helen researched mentoring across the world before founding TwoCan® Mentor, a programme built to create meaningful connections within the food and farming community.
Charlotte Kingham, Clarkson’s Farm, Head Butcher of Hops & Chops at The Farmer’s Dog
Charlotte Kingham appears in Series 5 of Clarkson’s Farm and is passionate about nose-to-tail butchery, British produce and farm-to-fork education.
She describes her route into butchery as “unexpected.” Growing up around horses, heavily involved in Young Farmers (YFC) and studying agriculture at Hartpury, she travelled to New Zealand and America before returning to agriculture and joining the Farmer’s Dog team.
A chance opportunity to help in the butchery department led her into the trade.
As one of relatively few women working within the trade, she is passionate about encouraging more women into butchery and promoting careers across the wider agricultural industry.
Laura Millar – Director and Head of Operations, H&H
Laura has more than 15 years’ experience within the agricultural industry, with expertise spanning operational leadership, business strategy, communications, and event management. As well as her work with H&H, she farms a 300-cow pedigree dairy herd and runs an elite pedigree cattle-breeding business specialising in Jerseys and Holsteins with her husband.
Nicola Bowers – Veterinary Technician and Nuffield Farming Scholar
Nicola is a pig veterinary technician who has gained a Nuffield Farming Scholarship to help guide best practice for efficient pig production. She travels across the UK as a veterinary technician specialising in pigs, and as a farrowing consultant.
She has a Masters degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare and carried out research into free farrowing for Newcastle University at the start of her career.
Alicia Martin – Frontier Agriculture
Alicia is still heavily involved in her mixed family farm but started her career with Armstrong Richardson in Stokesley before joining Frontier Agriculture with a team which focuses on environmental crops. She is regional manager for the North and Midlands alongside running the procurement team. Alicia is also a member of the Future Farmers management board which led her to apply for the Goodall Agri-development programme.
