We offer free one day courses for Primary School and a select few for Secondary School staff (marked with an *). All are associated with outdoor learning, growing and mental health. The majority of courses are held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate with occasional courses held at other venues around Yorkshire.

Wed 2nd October - Growing at School Year Round - EYFS, KS1 & KS2

Learn how to create a productive school vegetable garden – Discover what to plant to ensure you have a crop ready in term time and explore strategies for maintaining the garden throughout the year.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Mon 7th October - Using Nature's Resources for Learning and Playing - EYFS & KS1

Come and learn how to utilise nature’s resources to add fun to outdoor learning in and outside your school grounds.

Linking to the curriculum with ideas on how to teach children simple games, group and independent play using mud, sticks, leaves and rocks. Learn how to utilise these ideas throughout the seasons and all for FREE!

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Thurs 10th October - Creature Comforts (Habitats) - KS1 & KS2

Children need nature (& nature needs children)! Discover some simple ways to optimise the habitats available to you, however limited. We’ll look for mini beasts, survey the field and try pond-dipping. Explore simple activities to attract nature and create habitats. You’ll plan what changes you might make & we’ll discuss available resources.

Mon 14th October - * Inclusive Approaches to working across the Curriculum - EYFS, KS1, KS2 & above

Try out a range of highly motivating Forest School activities which can be used in school to engage the most challenging pupils including those with autism and complex needs. Participants will have first hand experience of simple activities which bring the whole curriculum to life using a holistic approach.

The course will suit all Key Stages with activities being adaptable to suit individual interest and ability. The aim is to inspire practitioners to use aspects of the natural world in their everyday practice to make it more inclusive. Although there will be emphasis on working with pupils with autism and complex needs, it will suit practitioners working in a range of settings.

Tues 22nd October - Awesome Outdoor Art - EYFS, KS1 & KS2

This course enables participants to explore natural materials, creating art on the outdoor canvas.

We will use natural materials gathered on site, with some additional recycled items and simple tools, to make a range of awesome art pieces including, hanging and standing sculptures; collages; glass lanterns; picture frames; whilst exploring the links to the national curriculum, topics and stories.

Wed 23rd October - Outdoor Maths & Navigation - KS2

Discover exciting new ways of delivering “KS2 maths”, through developing your skills and knowledge to teach compass, direction and a range of navigation techniques.

You will look at where direction comes from; how to use a compass and techniques for teaching these skills; navigation activities using a compass; basis of where maps come from, their links to aerial photos; exploring the world of symbols and signs; reading maps and creating sketch maps. Finishing with how you can bring this learning to life using orienteering at school.

Thurs 24th October - Mindfulness in Nature - EYFS, KS1 & KS2

Learn how to use our natural world as a tool for teaching mindfulness. Find out how to use the outdoors and what nature provides us with in all seasons and in all weathers to enable children to be happy, calm and confident inside and out.

Mon 11th November - Using Outdoor Learning to support Intent, Implementation and Impact (OFSTED 2019) - KS1 & KS2

OSTED’s new framework comes into play from September 2019. With this shift towards the curriculum, this course looks at how outdoor learning can broaden and deepen your school’s curriculum. Whatever your intent, outdoor learning can support you to enrich the skills, learning and experience of all children throughout their school life and beyond.

During the day, we will look at the benefits of outdoor learning and how it supports OFSTEDs new framework, giving participants the skills to take all aspects of the curriculum outdoors and helping them disseminate this information for a whole school approach.

We will look at methods of taking the curriculum outside, illustrating along the way, how it helps disadvantaged learners, broadens vocabulary and offers contextualised learning. Participants will recognise many of the methods used, but will experience how this learning can be transferred to a different setting to help embed learning and offer a range of memorable experiences that support the national curriculum.

Participants are invited to bring some topic planning, including learning outcomes, with them for part of this workshop.

Tues 12th November - * Outside Makes us Happy Inside - KS2 & above

This day will explore the therapeutic properties of natural environments and how emotional literacy and mental wellbeing can be explored in the outdoors.  You’ll take part in a variety of activities considering approaches such as ‘Nature Connection’ and ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ and take a look at case studies where outdoor learning is the keystone to successful mental health promotion projects.

We’ll share tools for working with children and young people to reduce stress and anxiety in the outdoors and you’ll also have a chance to find out more about how working in nature makes you feel inside.

Wed 13th November - Forest School Fun: A Taster Session - EYFS, KS1 & KS2

This course introduces the concept and principles of Forest School. Explore the learning opportunities and experience taster activities such as den-building, using ropes and building a campfire. It is an ideal introduction to those considering undertaking formal Forest School training.

Mon 25th November - Developing your Outside Space for Learning - EYFS, KS1 & KS2

Whether you only have a playground or are overwhelmed with your outdoor area, learn tips and ideas to make the most of what you have. See how you can minimise planning and preparation with a few simple tricks. The focus will be a broad based approach to curriculum learning including STEM activities plus Geography, History and English. We will also look at how to set up simple growing spaces that are effective and easy to manage.
