We offer free one day courses for staff from Primary Schools, Nurseries and a select few for Secondary School staff (marked with an *). All are associated with outdoor learning, growing and mental health.

The majority of courses are held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate with occasional courses held at other venues around Yorkshire. Our courses start at 9.30am and finish at 3pm and include refreshments and lunch unless otherwise stated.

Wednesday 2nd February - Awesome Outdoor Art - EYFS, KS1, KS2

This course will enable delegates to explore natural materials to create art on the outdoor canvas. By the end of the course they will have:

  • Explored techniques in using sticks; the potential of leaves; uses of different woods; using simple tools.
  • Made a range of awesome art pieces: hanging & standing sculptures, collages, lanterns, stick people.
  • Discussed how these ideas may be applied in their role.
  • In addition, we will explore links to the National Curriculum, topics and books / stories.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Monday 14th February - Inspiring Literacy Outdoors - EYFS, KS1, KS2

Come along and discover all the ways that we can use the outdoors to enhance literacy learning. The day will look at how to maximise your outdoor space to help your children develop their literacy skills and support the work done in class. The morning will be spent exploring our own creativity using some classic texts, including nursery rhymes, fairy tales and classic children’s novels. In the afternoon we will look at how to pull in literacy to create cross curricular topic activities in the outside space at your school.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Wednesday 16th February - Spectacular Science - KS2

Enhance your classroom-based science through the introduction and development of large-scale and /or outdoor learning activities. Using games, practical activities and experiments, we will explore various aspects of the KS2 science curriculum, including plants, animals, light, forces & magnets and material properties.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Wednesday 2nd March - Growing at school all year round - EYFS, KS1, KS2

Learn how to create a productive school vegetable garden – Discover what to plant to ensure you have a crop ready in term time and explore strategies for maintaining the garden throughout the year.

This course takes place outdoors for the majority of the day, please dress in outdoor clothing and bring warm layers, waterproofs and both indoor and outdoor footwear.

Monday 7th March - Don't Panic: it's a climate emergency - KS1, KS2

Participate in a selection of climate conscious crafts to develop climate literacy across the curriculum. This course includes short workshops which aim to spark discussion around the climate crisis and how it relates to our everyday lives and to empower young people to make a difference locally and to feel hopeful for the future.

This course is also suitable for teachers working in special schools due to the experience of the tutor.

Wednesday 23rd March - **NEW** Where does my food come from? - KS1, KS2

Be prepared to ‘dig in’ and come on a journey learning how soil health affects the quality of the milk you drink and the bread you eat. Learn fun engaging activities that will help children understand where food comes from and why healthy soil is vital for farmers to grow nutrient rich produce for us to eat.

The course will cover many aspects of the national curriculum including ‘living things and their habitats’, ‘plants’ and ‘cooking & nutrition’.
