John Fenton warmly invites you to
Springwell Farm, Driffield, YO25 3EL
on Friday 7th June at 6 pm for second Tye Trophy Farm Walk.
John Fenton is the Head Judge of the Tye Trophy Judging Panel and a previous winner and he describes the Tye Trophy as an award that finds highly commercial farms which more than meet their obligations on conservation.
Springwell Farm is 500 hectares of land situated at the headwaters of the Driffield Beck. As a result the unit is mainly arable in nature. With cropping including Seed Wheat, Oilseed Rape and Vining Peas – totalling 425 hectares. The remainder of the area includes woodland, permanent pasture and an SSSI adjacent to the beck. Highland cattle graze on unimproved chalk grassland, where they have had a significant impact on the return of wildflowers to the area.
Through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme and ELS / HLS Schemes, areas adjacent to the SSSI have been substantially enhanced and include 12 hectares of arable reversion. The fields have a six-meter grass margin with hedgerows that are sympathetically managed for wildlife.
The farm also offers free school visits and provides a purpose-built classroom.
