Volunteers sought to deliver farmers first aid training

Volunteer paramedics, doctors and nurses are being sought to deliver first aid training to farmers in Yorkshire, as part of a Defra-funded programme involving the Yorkshire Agricultural Society to boost farmers’ health and wellbeing across the North of England.

F3A, a charity run by volunteers which specifically provides first aid courses to the agricultural and forestry industries, has been commissioned by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society to deliver this training to farmers across Yorkshire at a highly subsidised rate, making this potentially life-saving training accessible to all.

Cumbria-based F3A is now looking for paramedics, doctors and nurses to volunteer to help deliver a series of courses at locations across Yorkshire over the next two years.

To find out more, prospective volunteers are invited to attend a recruitment event at the Great Yorkshire Showground on Thursday 26th September.

Moira Fisher, F3A Trustee said:

For many years, F3A has been delivering courses in Cumbria and the North of England and we are delighted to bring this course to Yorkshire.

We are looking for doctors, paramedics and nurses who have a specialist interest in emergency medicine and pre-hospital care to help us deliver these courses to farmers in Yorkshire.

At our recruitment event on 26th September, the aim is to give a complete understanding of the course development and structure, and to support volunteers to help deliver the course.

Farming is the most dangerous occupation in the UK. There is a fatality every nine days in the UK on a farm. Our mission is to change that.

The knowledge gained from attending an F3A course, we hope leads to improved outcomes for farm casualties.

If you are positive about saving lives on farms, please come along to our launch event on 26th September.

Allister Nixon, CEO of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society said:

As a farming charity working year-round to champion and support agriculture and farming families, farm fatalities are a huge concern, and we are determined to do what we can to make a positive difference.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Yorkshire Rural Support Network promotes and provides sources of help – practical, financial, medical and emotional – to those who live in farming and rural communities, and the award of Defra funding gives us even greater scope to do this.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society is one of a consortium of well-established agricultural organisations that has secured £150,000 from Defra to deliver health and well-being support to farmers and rural communities across the North over the next two years.

F3A has been commissioned to deliver first aid training in Yorkshire with a portion of this funding.

With the funds, the partners – which also include The Farmer Network Ltd, Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services and Field Nurse – seek to enhance their collective mission to build connected and resilient farming communities, and “keep farming stronger for longer”.
