‘The Quiet Strength Behind the Farm: small steps, quiet nudges, big impact’

Featuring a conversation between Nuffield Scholar Lucia Slack and RABI Regional Manager – North East, Sally Conner

*Please note: This event is free of charge, however, either a valid show ticket or YAS membership is required to gain admission to the Great Yorkshire Showground.

This is your invitation to join us for the Women In Farming Network’s Summer Social at the Great Yorkshire Show, from 4pm on Thursday 10 July in the Innovation Zone (pictured below and located off Fifth Avenue, near Brown Gate).

Join us for an informal gathering to share stories, tips, and insights about the unseen – but vital – role women play in supporting the wellbeing of their families and communities.

The topic of the get-together is The Quiet Strength Behind the Farm: small steps, quiet nudges, big impact.

And just as important, we will chat about how to look after ourselves while we’re busy looking out for everyone else.

No pressure, no patronising pep talks – just an opportunity to chat with others who get the reality of it.

The gathering will bring together guest speaker, Lucia Slack, a mental health nurse and farmer’s wife from Cumbria who is studying a Nuffield Farming Scholarship sponsored by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and Sally Conner, RABI Regional Manager – North East who will be ‘in conversation’ about the topic.

Whether you’re actively farming, supporting others, or just interested in this topic, you’re very welcome to join us for strawberries and cream, and good conversation.

Meet our speakers

Lucia Slack

Lucia works as an NHS mental health nurse in rural Cumbria and lives on a farm where her husband Johnny is a first-generation dairy farmer in the Eden Valley.

Last year, Lucia was awarded a prestigious Nuffield Farming Scholarship to study ‘Addressing Suicide in Agriculture: Supporting and Preventing the Biggest Hidden Danger Today’.

Sally Conner

Sally Conner

Sally has been married to a farmer for over 40 years and in that time has seen the highs and lows of being part of a farming family and business.

She is a partner along with her husband and son on a farm in East Yorkshire, contract fattening pigs.

Sally has also been the Regional Manager for RABI for the past 18 years so has a vast knowledge of the complexities of surviving as a farmer!

She is a huge ambassador about the importance of the role of a woman in a farming family so looks forward to having a chat about it.

Women In Farming

The Women In Farming Network was created in 2013 as an initiative of the Yorkshire Rural Support Network at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, following requests from women living and working on farms and related industries.

The Network holds a rolling programme of events to bring the community together and hosts a private Yorkshire Women In Farming Facebook group of more than 700 members to keep conversations and support going all year round.
