Future Farmers update with Philippa Gray

In this update, Future Farmers of Yorkshire Coordinator Philippa Gray previews the network’s Breakfast Meeting at the 167th Great Yorkshire Show and invites applications to join the group’s Management Board.

Like so many in agriculture, the Future Farmers of Yorkshire network is entering a busy period, although less silage orientated and more planning focused.

We’re looking ahead to our flagship event of the year, on Wednesday 15 July at the Great Yorkshire Show, as well as opening applications to join our Management Board.

Join us for our flagship event of the year!

Our Great Yorkshire Show Breakfast Meeting is focusing on ‘Facts or Fads: What Food Trends Mean for Farmers’.

Plant-based, high-protein, regenerative, local, organic… food trends are everywhere we look. But how much are these trends actually making a change to what happens on farms?

That’s the question at the heart of the discussion panel, bringing together industry experts from across the food supply chain.

Are farmers shifting production to match what consumers say they want? Or do many of these trends come and go without leaving much of a mark?

And perhaps more importantly: what do you think is driving food trends right now, and is it even worth paying attention to?

We’ll be exploring how these ideas travel through the supply chain, shaping everything from supermarket shelves to decisions made on farm.

If you have a view, or simply want to hear the debate, come along and join the conversation.

Proceedings start with an informal breakfast and networking at 8.15am, the perfect opportunity to catch up with friends and meet other likeminded farming people before the panel discussion begins at 8.40am.

It’s free to attend but you will need either a Great Yorkshire Show ticket valid for Wednesday 15 July or YAS membership to gain admission to the Great Yorkshire Showground.

Please register your place at the meeting in advance to inform catering arrangements.

Help shape the work of Future Farmers

If you are keen to play a bigger part in shaping discussions like this, that brings me nicely back to recruiting new Management Board members.

The term of a Management Board member is three years, in a voluntary capacity.

The level of commitment can vary depending on the level of activity for the network, but we anticipate around one day per month.

Ideally, candidates will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, with enthusiasm to support the delivery of events and opportunities for members of the network.

We believe farming in Yorkshire belongs at the leading edge of UK agriculture, and the aim of Future Farmers of Yorkshire is to inspire and develop the very best to lead Yorkshire’s agricultural industries to a thriving future.

If you are passionate about agriculture in Yorkshire, we want to hear from you.

While many will be watching the skies and racing weather windows in the weeks ahead, the team at Yorkshire Agricultural Society are making final preparations to welcome members and visitors to the Great Yorkshire Showground for the Great Yorkshire Show, from Tuesday 14 – Friday 17 July.

We’re excited to see many of you on 15 July for the Breakfast Meeting, and welcoming new voices onto the Future Farmers Management Board.

Future Farmers of Yorkshire was launched in 2010 to bring together like-minded farmers, vets and industry supporters.

Since then the group has been joined by over 1,000 forward-thinking members, eager to expand their knowledge and excel in their careers. We support them by providing a platform for debate and the sharing of ideas.

The group is supported by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and is open to everyone within the industry. Members are from a range of sectors and enterprise sizes, with a mix of tenants, owner-occupiers, managers and employees.
